Dual Laminate Project a Success

Major European Chemical Company Hires Plastek Werks to Successfully Complete Dual Laminate Piping and Tank Project

A major European chemical company was replacing failing process piping and a bulk storage tank constructed from Type 316 stainless steel, as a result of chlorine chemistry exposure. Project engineers, working with both corporate designers in Europe, and Plastek Werks applications specialists identified two possible construction materials that would provide long term performance. One exotic alloy material, Hastelloy C-276 proved to be too expensive as the material of construction. Polypropylene/FRP (fiberglass reinforced plastic) dual laminate construction was selected based on cost, and performance background in Europe and the U.S.

Plastek Werks provided a 10’ diameter X 17’ tall, insulated, heated traced, pressure vessel, and process piping for this project. Design and fabrication had to meet ASME RTP – 1 specification for composite mechanical systems. Additionally, the piping had to be field installed. This scope included working at heights from 10 feet to 35 feet over head while performing butt welding of liner and fiberglass overlay to produce a flangeless piping system. The owner wanted a flangeless system to insure against leaks that could create hazards within the work area.
